My Journey
Growing up I was always very tiny. I didn’t gain weight, so working out wasnt something I even had to worry about.
I have never been the “workout” type. Then I met my future husband Mario in 2002 and I don’t know what happened other then we were “happy”. Over the first few years of our relationship I gained 50 pounds 🙁
Once we got engaged we started “Dieting” and trying out whatever we could to lose weight. I hated every minute of it! I was always hungry and I HATED working out!
Mario would try to push me but I would get frustrated. I would go through the motions because I wanted to look good for my wedding, but there wasn’t one moment that I actually enjoyed what I was doing.
I did lose weight for the wedding, but of course once that was over I went back to eating whatever I wanted and not working out anymore.
So I started gaining weight all over again.
Then last August our friends Sara and Shawn kept posting about this bootcamp that they attended.
So I started asking questions, and Sara asked if I wanted to go that evening. I said sure, not really sure what to expect…
I went anyway, and from night 1 I was hooked!
I was so pumped up, I couldn’t wait to go again and I was upset when I wasn’t able to make it.
A few weeks in I got hurt and tore my meniscus in my knee. I was very upset when the Doctor told me no bootcamp for 6 weeks and that surgery was a possibility.
That scared me ALOT. I have never hurt myself before so the thought of surgery really freaked me out. I could have given up right then and there.
There was my “excuse”, but Derek had other plans for me.
So I returned to bootcamp the next day and we started all upper body strengthening. While I was happy to be there, I was very frustrated that I couldn’t be part of the group exercise and do what everyone else was doing.
There were many days that I beat the heck out of the tires while tears poured down my face. I just wanted to be back to normal.
Over the next few weeks Derek would check and see how my leg was progressing and once I felt okay, I returned back to group sessions!
And guess what, NO SURGERY NEEDED! Thank God!
Then the team challenges began and I again was frustrated. I am a numbers girl and while the number on the scale never seems to change, I was definitely seeing results in my clothes. So obviously something is working.
I am a lot stronger then when I started and can do more then I ever thought possible.
Derek has helped me to overcome fears and push myself farther then I ever let myself think I could do .
This past weekend I finished my first mud endeavor with my husband and an amazing group of friends. It took me an hour and 19 mins and I am completely thrilled with that time. I went into in hoping to finish in 2 hours.
7 months ago there is no way I would have even considered doing one of them.
It was really amazing to finish and look back at what I completed and know that “I did it”
I’m looking forward to the future and seeing what else my body and Derek has in store for me.
I will be going on a cruise in the next few months with some friends, and I cant wait to wear a bathing suit that actually looks cute on me! Instead of being embarrassed by the way I’ve looked over the last few years.
Thank you Derek for pushing me every day and not letting me give up. I’ve said “I can’t” a lot over the last few months, but somehow I always seem to finish!!
Thank you to my husband Mario for always being there for me and supporting me when I just want to quit.
Thank you to my whole bootcamp family for always being there to help me finish a workout, or go do a workout in the morning because I can’t make it that evening, or pushing me to finish an Ironman challenge all by myself!
Bootcamp is definitely more then a bootcamp, it truly is a family. One that I have come to love!
