Health: physical, mental, marital
Guest blog post by Transformation Tuesday winner Kim Montgomery:
Everyone has a breaking point, something that says to them ‘I have to do something’. I have heard a lot of stories at boot camp as to what got them started. Here is mine….
2013 was a hard year.
By April our world had come crashing down.
Not only had we lost our dog of 12 years but I was also pregnant.
I went into labor at 20 weeks and we lost our son.
At the end of it all we found out my husband Dan had lost his job.
I was not healthy, and we were in a rut and a depression that we needed to get out of for ourselves, our children and our marriage. I had discussed medications with Dan, and neither of us wanted that.
On a family vacation my sister in law said to me “You two don’t seem very happy anymore.” That was the breaking point. I had thought we were hiding it well. We had to do something.
My friend Arlene had been doing boot camp and had been pushing me to come for a while. I knew physical exercise is something that would help us both; I just didn’t know how much it actually would. I knew we needed something we could do together.
September was the start of this journey. When I walked up the driveway at 8am on that first Monday morning I thought…“This is going to SUCK! What had I gotten myself into?”
I was embarrassed by how I looked and felt. I couldn’t do a plank for much more than 15 seconds. Every exercise left me out of breath. I could not even pull myself up for a sit and reach. And of course, like many others before me, threw up after my first workout!
But I loved it. I registered us the next day!
Everyone was encouraging and helpful the first day, there were no strange stares. It felt like a family right away. That feeling has continued to grow! I have never felt judged or embarrassed by what I cannot do, only encouraged to keep trying.
When Derek started the first preworkout challenge in October, which started with 10 situps at the begining of the month and increased to 240 situps each day, I had to use a strap to help me do every sit up. By the time that month was over, I didn’t need the strap anymore! The first night I did one on my own I was shocked and excited, but I did not celebrate that little victory on my own. My boot camp family congratulated me too!
I look forward to boot camp every day.
When I don’t get to go, I admit, I am a little grumpy.
It was so hard to take that first step but so worth it. Our spirits are lifted, good things have happened, Boot camp has changed our bodies and minds.
Every day at boot camp things get a little easier. I am by far not the fastest or strongest.
I could not tell you how much weight I have lost; to be honest I don’t care. For me it is about getting healthy.
I have a long way to go in this journey and I know my boot camp family, Derek, and Rich will be there to encourage me to push myself in every way. I have overcome so many hurdles in boot camp, physically, mentally and literally!!!
This is one more way that it is “more than just a boot camp”

Kim is an inspiration to a lot of our bootcampers and the coolest part is that it has nothing to do with anything she has ever said to anyone. It has to do with the fact that she doesn’t quit, pushes her hardest each and every day, as well as breaking through new barriers with more consistency than anyone on our current team.
In our last challenge in November, Kim lost an amazing 16 pounds in a 30 day transformation contest!
Since January 5th, in only 6 weeks, Kim lost 9.05% bodyfat percentage, gained over 12 pounds of lean muscle, and lost a ridiculous 29 pounds of fat!!
More importantly though, she can no longer be labeled as ‘unfit or unhealthy’. Her bodyfat percentage is in the ‘healthy range’ and there is no end in sight.
Kim is one of my MAP to Success diet accountability program clients. She is meticulous with her meals. She texts me her gameplan for the day, every day. She asks questions. She follows through. I never doubt that she is on track.
Oh by the way, Kim is also a mother of two kids under 5 years old, a nurse and works overnights! Her schedule is crazy.
But, she never makes excuses.
Neither should you.
