Guest blog post by Transformation Tuesday success story Lisa McConnell…

My good friend Nicole Rossman would NEVER SHUT UP about what she was doing at bootcamp 🙂

If you’ve never done it, it is kind of hard to picture, so I would just smile and nod. I had been doing Power Yoga and swimming, but the weight I gained just wasn’t coming off.

I spent my whole life being smaller than a twig, so when medication my doctor put me on caused me to gain nearly 40 pounds (the first 25 in 6 months!) I didn’t recognize myself anymore. It didn’t help that I had major guilt about feeling “fat” because I knew at 5’4” 155 I wasn’t what most would call fat.

It’s hard to explain, but I hated myself for the weight and ashamed for hating myself all at the same time.

After a million and one play by plays of her weekly bootcamps Nicole finally convinced me to check it out. It didn’t hurt that it was the same time Derek was offering the Teacher Special. I figured I could do anything for 30 days!

If you know Nicole you know she has a crazy schedule, so I knew I would need someone else to suffer through this with me. Plus, we were nowhere near the same level of ability!

So I texted my friend Alison Gage to tell her about the special, and honestly that’s the best thing I could have done. After signing up myself of course.

I can’t tell you what a difference it makes having someone with you. I NEVER would have come this far without her.

Get up early and work out every morning during my summer break? Are you kidding me!?

But when it’s more than just you “suffering” it makes all the difference in the world. Having a friend by your side doesn’t make the drive so long, or those burpees so hard, or Rich pushing you to go harder/faster/longer, all that bad.

I’m not going to lie. It was BRUTAL.

There were days I would be crawling to the next station. And just when I was thinking, “there’s no way I can do this” I would look over and there would be Alison, dragging her carcass across the floor right along with me. That keeps you going like nothing else can!

I think my first personal victory was a month or so after I joined, during the Fitness Challenge. Alison and I went at it hard. When at the end of the first day we heard Derek say something like, “remember, this is only your base count, don’t feel like you have to go 110%” Shit. What have we just done to ourselves?!?

But when the challenge was over and I saw how much I had improved on my counts and how many inches and body fat I’d lost, I knew it was worth it.

It’s hard to see your own results. But the more I went the better I felt about myself.

When school started I was nervous we would struggle, maybe even lose what mojo we had gained over the summer. But I shouldn’t have worried. On days I’m too tired to go, I do it for her. She does the same for me. And when those days are cardio workouts, we blame each other.

Staying dedicated is easy when you have amazing, fun trainers! You actually like them as people, even when they’re making you work until your limbs fall off! And the other members are just as friendly and motivating, never hesitating to take first timers under their wing.

No matter what level you are, you always feel like you belong.

Last month I did my first 4-hour muscle retreat and lived to tell about it!

I drank the punch. I’m all in. And it couldn’t be with a better group of people!
