One of my earliest memories of becoming a gym rat was drinking my first protein shake. Wow was it horrible! They all couldn’t be this bad could they? The harsh reality was YES!!
Luckily for all of us, protein shakes and meal replacement powders have come a long way since then. In fact I would go as far as to say some protein powders are delicious!

Not only have the flavors, consistency and lack of aftertaste improved, but so has the quality. Now there are so many varieties of products by so many different brands that there is definitely a product out there for everyone.
The key to choosing a good protein powder involves a few different components:
- Look for a product that lists whey isolate or hydrolyzed whey as the first ingredient
- Look for a product that is under 5 grams of carbs per scoop (personally I enjoy eating my carbs rather than drinking them 🙂 )
- Look for a product that contains under 100mg of dietary cholesterol
- Look for a product that has under 2 grams of fat per scoop, unless the ingredients contain Medium Chain Triglycerides
Enough of the technical stuff already!
Another major component to keep in mind is which flavor you choose. As a “Chocoholic” myself, I drink 2-3 chocolate shakes a day and have done so everyday for 10+ years. Plain and simple…I’m boring! Vanilla will give you the best bang for your buck since you can add so many different flavors to it. Try varying your base liquid to constantly add variety to your smoothies.
