Jennifer’s Diary: Week One

The first thing I did Monday morning was curse Derek Kuryliw’s name (sorry, Derek).  It was 5:00 am. Granted, it was only 15 minutes earlier than my usual wake-up time, but when you’re not a morning person, it makes a difference.

I rubbed my eyes and looked over my morning workout options. Twelve minutes of squat jumps, push-ups, bicycle crunches and lunges seemed like the most doable.

But two minutes in, I was huffing and puffing. Needless to say, I’m out of shape.

Fourteen months ago, this would have been a breeze. Then I moved to Colombia, home of arepas (cheese-filled corn griddle cakes) and chicharrón (fried pork rinds). It’s also a place where eating dessert at lunch is commonplace.

Long story short: Between the early mornings, the smell of cheesy corn cakes wafting in the streets, and free desserts at school lunch, I packed on a solid 10-15 pounds since I’ve been here.

But I never dared to weigh myself. That is, until Derek made me. He also had me take measurements and pictures. And let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. I actually did a double take when I saw the one of my backside. Does my butt really look like that?

It’s time for a change.

I’ll be writing a weekly blog entry to track my progress. Hopefully it will inspire others as well as keep me accountable.

One week down and five pounds lighter.

That might be reason enough to stop muttering obscenities in the morning!

I love when my ears are ringing in the morning. it reminds me I did my job well the previous day 🙂

Every successful journey has its first step. I’m glad this first step wasn’t pressing the “snooze” button!
