Carolynn new port richey bootcamps fitness success story

as much as I love this picture, my thighs seem to take up most of the photo!!

Guest blog post by Transformation Tuesday feature Carolyn Broom:

Starting bootcamp was a chance happening, barely planned, and strongly recommended by my great friend Kathy.

With medical and personal events having “mis”-shaped the previous two years of my life, I realized that I was in need of a change, but I would have never have thought about bootcamp as the source.

I chickened out on the first “planned” night, but made it in on Tuesday, at the end of September last year.

From that first day, I could see the potential of wellness that bootcamp could provide, but I had no idea that it would not only shape my physical well being, but also my mental health.

I have left bootcamp at least twice in floods of tears, (unfortunately one witnessed!!), but now realize that being part of this huge family means that I am one of many with extra baggage, and one of many with a desire to leave it behind and change myself.

DSC_0712I don’t remember having any true physical fears about joining bootcamp, it was more of a “face yourself in the mirror” fear, as I had to learn to accept all that I could not do.

I think one of the first comments I made to Derek, was that I was “the weakest ass physical therapist” out there, and I am in a profession that is supposed to be strong.

I could not do a sit up, had never even heard of a “V” up, let alone do one…and what was this crazy plank exercise that seemed to appear almost every work out??

Then tires get added, and weights, and running, and jump up onto what???

I can’t even believe that I now have the “lady balls”, (thanks to my daughter Lauren for that quote!), to sign up for my first mud endeavor 5K with my younger daughter…in 2 weeks.

And I don’t like to run ..at ALL!!

My amazing and beautiful daughter has joined this journey with me.

My amazing and beautiful daughter has joined this journey with me.

But it’s OK because I have physical and mental strength that I did not have 7 months ago. I am actually looking forward to the feeling of just finishing a race.

My goals are to just continue, to see where and how this body can still be transformed. I came into this endeavor only looking for core strength, but found health, wellbeing, and a 20+ lb. weight loss as a very beneficial side effect!!

I have worked up to 5 nights a week, can tolerate some double sessions now, and still admire the strength and stamina of the varsity bootcamp group.

Anybody CAN do this. It is difficult at first, and I still find the timed challenges  just that…challenging! But every now and then I surprise myself at the improved technique I have for an exercise.

It’s as simple as… just do it!!

I remember Carolyn’s first night.

Some people tackle their first night with confidence.

Some people approach their first night with a little fear, hesitation and reluctance of the unknown.

Some people face their fears head on, go 100% all-out for the first time since highschool and fizzle out fast.

And then there was Carolyn’s first night…deer in headlights, extremely disappointment in herself, an overwhelming dose of reality and a giant HOLY SH!T moment!

Sometimes we get so busy with life, work, stress and the day to day grind that we don’t see how far we’ve let ourselves ‘slip’ out of shape.

From the exterior, Carolyn was a slender and fit-looking mom, physical therapist and your everyday ‘always been skinny girl’. Then in 3 little words: “lift your legs” while lying on her back did I realize once again, fitness does not have a look, shape or appearance.

She couldn’t do it.

There was no way I was going to believe that this physical therapist who looked to be in great shape couldn’t lift her legs.

Next I asked her to roll over to her belly and hold herself on her elbows in plank position….seconds later she dropped.

She was so embarrassed and so dissapointed in herself. Her exact quote was “I’m the most out of shape physical therapist”.

At that exact moment or point in her life she had a decision to make, either keep going down the same path that has gotten her to this point or, work her ass off relentlessly no matter how hard it gets.

She choose the second route and has been kicking her own ass consistently for just over 6 months now.

She is now a strong woman, mom and physical therapist. Her core strength is now an after thought as she can hold in plank position for minutes while doing the most advanced forms of knee in’s, spidermans, plank crawls and more.

She beats the hell out of tires, sprints up hills, flips tractor tires, jumps, pushes, curls, throws or whatever other challenges are in her way.

She helps keep her best friend and her daughter accountable in their fitness goals.

She has inspired her high school daughter Lauren to start exercising and getting healthier.

She is living a healthier lifestyle to better herself and the people she loves around her.

Getting started is the hardest part. Her journey didn’t start easy but, most great things aren’t easy.
