Derek smirks, “Hope you’re feeling competitive today” as we march up the driveway.

I wondered why, not taking into consideration the rope around his neck.

He’s so unpredictable. But what the heck! I’m up for anything.

Orange cones are set on the ground, the rope is stretched across the sandspur laden g

round.

“Warm up your hands everybody!”

I’m waiting for the “Cuz shit’s about to get real.” (But it never comes)

Oh I know what’s coming now…Tug of War!! YES! I get all squirmy inside and I want to do a Happy Dance!!

“Don’t seem too overenthusiastic!”, I say to myself coolly.

Oh Tug of War, how I missed you dear old friend.

I haven’t “tugged” or “warred” since middle school.

It’s an old time favorite and I’m totally stoked!

I clap my hands together and rub vigorously.

Now ‘back in the day’ I would’ve spit on them but I’ve grown up in some ways.

Some, not much but some. Maybe a tad.

Enter “Eye of the Tiger” soundtrack here…

The grueling combat ensues testing the eager combatants strength and endurance.

The rope tears through the flesh of your hands. Plant your heels!! Dig DEEP!

Some lose their footing but regain again in an effort of sheer will and determination to win!

Once! Twice! Three times!! Over and over again. A victorious team is crowned!

The crowd goes WILD! Chanting, yelling, congratulating. “Team 2! Team 2!” I hear them cry.

A celebratory victory lap is ran and we hold our flag high.

Trumpets blare our victory song and we rejoice! High fives! Smiles! Comradery!!

This is living!!

Okay, so some of that is fabricated, but you get the point.

Win, lose or draw, I had a blast!

I had a great time with everyone there that got up early to sweat, grunt and get healthy with me.

I sure beats doing the laundry that early.

So when do we get to play DODGEBALL Derek??

Fitness is not bias on your age, sex, ability, injuries or even in this case, your imagination.

We are humans and, just like water, we move in the path of least resistance.

The more often we do things we dread or don’t enjoy doing like walking on treadmills, “riding” the elliptical and dieting, the more likely we are to avoid (quit) when life gets stressful.

If you enjoy something you will do it. You will enjoy doing it. And you will do it even more!

Fitness is a journey, not a destination….enjoy the ride!
