What’s a Macro to You?

The Muscle Behind It All

How many people do you know that do cardio 3-5 times a week in hopes of dropping weight but still look the same after 6 months?

How many times do you see the same person ride their bicycle or walk around the block in hopes of slimming down, but 1 year later they still look the same?

How many people do you know walk or jog on the treadmill for 30-60 minutes a day, five days a week, but after years of doing this they still look the same?

How many people do you see in your gym that show up religiously, day in and day out, put in effort and hard work and still… look the same?

How long have YOU been doing these things in hopes of making a change, but still… look the same?

Let me guess, it’s your genetics?

You have a desk job?

Your parents were always over weight so that’s why you are?

It runs in the family?

You have a slow metabolism?

You are too busy to exercise?

It’s your age?

You have no control over it?

Right? WRONG!

Let’s start out with discussing this… on average the normal gym goer spends about 45-60 minutes in the gym at a time. So what are you doing during the other 23 hours in a day to better yourself, your health, your body, and to try and reach your fitness goals… anything at all?

Twenty three hours is a lot of time to be making an effort to progress towards a better and healthier lifestyle and body or a whole lot of time to be lazy, continue to mistreat it, not hold yourself accountable, and accept your current state of being. Don’t let your time and effort be wasted!

The BEST thing you can do for yourself, even if you fail to exercise for however long it may be, is to eat properly, enforce proper nutrition… and if you don’t know how, you need to learn NOW!

So the first question that comes to your mind is, “How many calories should I eat in a day?”

Well, let’s talk about where you actually get calories from. Calories obviously come from food, drinks, and other tasty objects that this world has to offer. What absolutely needs to be known is that calories aren’t all the same… they come from protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

You can eat 100 calories and think it’s good for you or acceptable because it’s such a small number; but if all 100 of those calories came from fats… is it still good for you? What about all 100 calories from protein? Carbohydrates?

Protein, fats, and carbohydrates are also known as “macronutrients” or “macros” in brief.

1 gram of protein = 4 calories 1 gram of carbohydrates = 4 calories 1 gram of fat = 9 calories

Just like calories aren’t all equal to each other, neither are macronutrients.

Protein

Proteins are comprised of amino acids. All amino acids can be produced by the body except for essential amino acids, which need to be fed to the body from an outside source (food).

When a protein is considered a “complete protein” it contains all of the essential amino acids. Missing just one of the essential amino acids will label the protein as an “incomplete protein” which isn’t utilized by the body as efficiently as a complete protein is.

So where are complete proteins found?

Anything that has ever had a heartbeat or came from something that has had a heartbeat is safe to call a complete protein. A good source of “complete protein” is going to be in any meat or dairy products.

As Derek says “Anything that flew, walked, swam or came from any of those things is a protein”
